While creating a list of batters with most runs in Ashes series we came across some legends but the names of some modern batting greats also featuring the list.
From Sir Donald Bradman & Wally Hammond, to modern Steve Smith and Joe Root, the Ashes has seen some of the finest batters piling up tremendous amount of runs with their solid technique and temperament. In this article, we take a look at the top 10 highest run getters in an Ashes series.

Most Runs in a Single Ashes Series
Sir Donald Bradman 974 runs in 1930
You would hardly be surprised if you see Don Bradman at the top of any batting record in the Ashes. He is not only scored the most runs in an ashes series in fact he is also topping the list of batters with most runs in Ashes history.
In the 1930 Ashes, Bradman piled up a massive tally of 974 runs in 7 innings. He averaged 139 in this series and scored 4 centuries in 7 innings. He contributed largely in Australia’s victory in this series.
Wally Hammond 905 runs in 1928
The English star Wally Hammond scored 905 runs in the 1928 Ashes Test Series. He scored 4 hundreds in the 9 innings during this series. His batting average was 113 during this series.
Mark Taylor 839 runs in 1989
The left handed opening batsman of Australia, Mark Taylor had a dream run in the 1989 Ashes. In 11 innings, he scored 839 runs averaging 83 with the bat. He contributed 5 half centuries and 2 centuries in Australia Ashes series win in 1989.
Interesting to note that it was only his second series and he was picked in the squad despite had a poor run in his first two test matches against West Indies where he managed 67 runs in 4 outings.
Sir Donald Bradman 810 runs in 1936
In the 1936 Ashes, Sir Donald Bradman scored 810 runs in 9 innings averaging 90. Interestingly, he also had 2 ducks in this series yet he managed to score 810 runs. He scored 3 centuries in this series.
Steven Smith 774 runs in 2019 Ashes
The only active test cricketer in this list is Steven Smith. The 2019 Ashes ended as draw, but Smith made it memorable for the Aussies with his 774 runs in the series. In 7 innings, he averaged 110 with the bat scoring 3 half centuries and 3 centuries.

In the 2010 Ashes, England’s left handed opening batsman Alastair Cook smashed 766 runs in 7 innings. He scored 2 centuries and 3 half centuries to assist England in winning 2010 Ashes.
Sir Donald Bradman 758 runs in 1934 Ashes
Sir Donald Bradman loved to bash the English bowling attack all around the park. In the 1934 Ashes, he scored 758 runs in 8 innings. He averaged 94.75 with the bat in this series and scored 2 centuries and 3 half centuries. He scored a triple hundred in this edition of Ashes.
Herbert Sutcliffe734 runs in 1924 Ashes
During the 1924 Ashes, Herbert Sutcliffe of England scored 734 runs in 9 innings. He scored 4 centuries and 2 half centuries, in his amazing run through the series. However, despite his hard work, Australia managed to seal the series.
