Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Today Match

The 4th match of the Asia Cup 2023 will be played between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore. The match is a must win for Bangladesh because they already have a defeat to their name, if they lost this one, they will be knocked out of the Asia Cup 2023. Afghanistan need to win and qualify straight away for the Super 4 stage. Following is the preview of Afghanistan vs Bangladesh today match in the Asia Cup 2023.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Today Match Preview

Bangladesh’s headache remains the fact that this game is a must win for them. They batted poorly in the first game against Sri Lanka and got bundled out for just 164 before losing the game by 4 wickets. Their bowlers did well to take 5 wickets of Sri Lanka, but their batting was terrible.

Afghanistan have also had a similar story. They are coming into the Asia Cup 2023 after a whitewash against Pakistan in the ODI series in Sri Lanka earlier. Afghanistan arrived in Pakistan quite early and have trained well in Lahore. Gaddafi’s pitch is always supportive for the spinners, and the quality of Afghan spinners seem superior to Bangladesh’s.

With warm conditions, the batsmen of both the sides can also have a good day. Bangladesh have traveled recently from Sri Lanka to Pakistan and they have had travel fatigue too. Afghanistan are relatively fresh, well trained and quite familiar with the conditions. Hence Afghanistan will begin as the favorites.

Bangladesh expected Playing XI

Bangladesh might make a bold call by playing Anamul Haque instead of Tanzid Hasan. It will be harsh with the young man as he has played just 1 game, but keeping the must win game in mind, Bangladesh can make this change.

Mohammad Naim, Anamul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan (C), Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Head to Head Record

The rivalry between Bangladesh and Afghanistan has been a very close one in ODI cricket. Both sides have played 14 times in ODI cricket, 8 have gone Bangladesh’s way while 6 have been won by Afghanistan. However, in Asia Cup (ODI), out of the 3 games, 2 have been won by Afghanistan while one has been won by Bangladesh.

Players to watch-out for

The opening duo of Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran are crucial for Afghanistan. Gurbaz gives the team a flying start while Ibrahim Zadran holds one end and is capable of playing long innings. Gurbaz recently smashed 151 in the 2nd ODI against Pakistan and proved that he is capable of massive destruction. Ibrahim Zadran averages 62 in his last 10 ODI matches. With the ball, the trio of Mujeeb, Rashid and Nabi remains the most dangerous. Mujeeb in particular has been mighty effective in ODI cricket.

For Bangladesh, Najmul Hussain Shanto has been brilliant in his last 10 ODI matches. He averages 45 in his last 10 ODIs and has scored heavily for Bangladesh. Even in the first game against Sri Lanka, Shanto scored 89 in tough conditions. With the ball, Bangladesh have done well as a unit with Shakib-al-Hasan being their lead spinner, taking wickets at regular intervals.
