Gambhir appointed India’s new head coach

Former Indian opening batter and star of World T20 2007, and World Cup 2011 finals, Gautam Gambir has been appointed as the new head coach of Team India. The appointment was quite predictable. However, since Team India recently won the World T20 2024, some people thought that Rahul Dravid might receive an extension but Rahul not opted for it.

Gautam Gambhir was the team Mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. He won the IPL 2024 with KKR. There were news that the Owner of KKR, Shahrukh Khan has stated that he will try his best to make Gambhir stay with KKR. However, now since Gambhir has been named the Head Coach of Team India, he won’t be able to work with KKR due to conflict of interest.

Gambhir as captain won two IPL trophies for KKR. After ending his playing career, he became the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, and Lucknow qualified for the playoffs in both seasons. Then in 2024, he had a triumphant season with KKR which then eventually elevated his coaching CV and got him to Team India.

Gautam’s first assignment will be the home series against Sri Lanka which comprises of three T20Is and as many ODIs. There is no update on the rest of the coaching panel but there are news that Gambhir will appoint his own support staff.

Currently Team India is in Zimbabwe and they are being coached by VVS Laxman. However, VVS had already made it clear that he has no intentions to coach team India in the longer run. Gautam Gambhir’s journey would be quite interesting to see as Team India has less than a year to prepare for Champions Trophy 2025 now. In T20Is the team is going through a transition phase as Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja, 3 senior pros have announced their retirement from the format. Now Gautam has to build a good side for the future.
