Letter to PCB: Fitness should not be preferred over form and talent

Pakistan Player Fitness Test

Since Mickey Arthur took over the reins of Pakistan Cricket Team as head coach we have been witnessing great emphasis put on the fitness of the players and only super fit players (as per PCB) get selected for Pakistan Cricket Team, with announcement of Pakistan squad for World Cup 2019 is due to be announced within couple of days Pakistan squad undergoes fitness teat at NCA.

With news around that opening batsman Abid Ali who impressed all and also shown some great form in recent times with the bat and all rounder Imad Wasim has failed the fitness test and their chances to get the flight for world cup are grim.

Look at players who can win place in Pakistan Team from nowhere

Just to bring into the notice of PCB and Mickey Arthur that fitness of players should be looked after but a player whose skills and form can help the side should be inducted irrespective of him passing or failing the fitness test until and unless there is any injury to player.

In past players like Sohail Khan and Fawad Alam excluded from the squad despite maintaining high standard of fitness level. Also the point to consider is that Pakistan would not have won the World Cup 1992 if fitness was the only criteria for selection of players.

Current Chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq would had not played the semi final of World Cup 1992 because he is not fit but it was talent which had made Imran Khan to select him in the final eleven and Inzi won that match single handedly. One of the major contributor in Pakistan win Javed Miandad who was declared unfit before the tournament and joined the team late and played many of the matches with back pain but still ended the tournament as top scorer for Pakistan during World Cup 1992 because of his talent, skills and experience.  More importantly skipper Imran Khan who had played the tournament with shoulder injury which had hampered his bowling ability throughout the tournament would not have led the side to win the World Cup if he had gone through the rigorous fitness test carried out by Micky Arthur and Co.

So it’s time Mickey Arthur should look out for players who can help him to win match with his talent and skills rather than selecting a player who is super fit but cant contribute in teams win because of lack of skills.
